Required Certifications


Licenses or Certifications Required for Teaching Positions
 

Some staff members are required to have certain licenses, certifications or meet other requirements to hold and/or perform his/her job (i.e., CDA, CDL, CPR, etc.). These employees are responsible for meeting and/or maintaining the appropriate license or certification for their positions.

 

1. Teachers in the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) must have: a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an early childhood (ZA) endorsement; a valid Michigan teaching certificate with a child development associate (CDA) credential; or a bachelor’s degree in child development with specialization in preschool teaching.

 

2. Assistant teachers in GSRP must have: an associate’s degree in early childhood education or child development or the equivalent; a child development associate (CDA) credential; or the equivalent as approved by the State Board (120 clock hours).

 

3. Teachers in the Head Start Program are required by 2013 to have: a baccalaureate or advanced degree in early childhood education; or a baccalaureate or advanced degree and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education, with experience teaching preschool-age children.

 

4. Assistant teachers in the Head Start Program must have: at least a child development associate credential; be enrolled in a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree; or be enrolled in a child development associate credential program to be completed within two years.

 

5. Teachers working in infant/toddler programs (center-based) must have an infant/toddler CDA.
