Children Birth to 5 Years and Expectant Mothers

To fulfill grant requirements, children that meet federal eligibility requirements for Head Start are enrolled first. See eligibility guidelines below.

BHK is accepting applications for:

  • Prenatal to Age 3 Programs

    •  Home Visiting

    • Infant/Toddler Care (Monday-Thursday, full day)

  • Preschool (Monday-Thursday, full and half-day options)

    • Head Start

    • Great Start Readiness Program

    • Parent Pay- Children 3 or 4 years of age.

How to Qualify for BHK’s Early Head Start or Head Start Program

Expectant mothers and children birth to 5 years may qualify for free programming if they meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Income- Families that earn less than 130% of federal income guidelines*. Families must provide verification of income from the last 12 months or calendar year.

  • Public Assistance (TANF, SSI, SNAP)- Families that receive TANF (cash benefits), Supplemental Security Income, or food assistance (SNAP) are eligible and must provide documentation.

  • Foster/Kinship Care- Children in foster care, awaiting placement, or in the care of family members (guardianship) are eligible.

  • Homelessness- Children who are experiencing homelessness or living temporarily with another due to hardships are eligible.

  • Local risk- Other factors are considered in determining program placement. Income requirements may be waived for up to 10% of enrollment for applicants that are transitioning from Early Head Start or have demonstrated risk.

How to Qualify for BHK’s Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)

Children 4 years old on or before September 1 may qualify for free programming if they meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Income- Families that earn less than 300% of federal income guidelines. Families must provide verification of income from the last 12 months or calendar year.

  • Public Assistance (TANF, SSI, SNAP)- Families that receive TANF (cash benefits), Supplemental Security Income, or food assistance (SNAP) are eligible and must provide documentation.

  • Foster/Kinship Care- Children in foster care, awaiting placement, or in the care of family members (guardianship) are eligible.

  • Homelessness- Children who are experiencing homelessness or living temporarily with another due to hardships are eligible.

  • Diagnosed Disability- Individual Education Plan (IEP) states child would benefit from an inclusive preschool environment.

  • Local risk- Other factors are considered in determining program placement i.e., English as a Second Language (ESL), low education attainment of parent/guardian, child abuse/neglect, or environmental risk.

Out-of-School Time Programming

To complete an enrollment application for K-6 Out-of-School Time (OST) programming, download the fillable registration packet (PDF Form) in the link below, complete fully, and email to ge@bhkfirst.org. If you have any questions or want to register by phone or in person, contact Melissa at 906-487-6600 ext. 61424.

Please follow these steps to complete the registration packet:

  1. Download the packet for the area you are registering in: Baraga County

  2.  Complete ALL fillable fields- if it does not apply, please put NONE in that field

  3.  Once all fields have been completed,

    • go to the Tools bar

    • click “Fill & Sign” to sign all required areas

Once completed registrations are received, you will be notified.
Due to licensing ratios and staffing, your child/children may be put on a waiting list.
